Zone Compliance Is Not Optional In A Bathroom
Bathrooms are subject to strict electrical zoning rules under BS 7671, dividing the space into defined zones that dictate which fittings and equipment are permitted in each area. Installing the wrong fitting in the wrong zone is not just a compliance issue; it is a genuine risk of electrocution that no qualified electrician should ever overlook.

Our Bathroom Electrical Installation FAQs
Bathroom electrical work falls under Part P of the Building Regulations and must be carried out by a qualified electrician. As a NICEIC Approved Contractor, we self-certify all notifiable bathroom electrical work, meaning you receive the correct certification without any additional steps. Always ensure the electrician you use is registered with a recognised competent person scheme.
BS 7671 divides a bathroom into zones based on proximity to water. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower itself, Zone 1 is directly above it, and Zone 2 extends further into the room. Each zone has strict requirements for the IP rating of fittings and the types of equipment permitted. Installing the wrong product in the wrong zone is a serious safety risk and a common cause of failed EICR inspections.
Yes. We carry out bathroom electrical installations in rental properties and HMOs across Birmingham for landlords and letting agents. Every installation is correctly certificated, satisfies EICR requirements and meets the electrical safety obligations that apply to privately rented properties.
The required IP rating depends on the zone in which the fitting is installed. Zone 0 requires a minimum of IP67, Zone 1 requires IP44 as a minimum, and Zone 2 also requires IP44 as a minimum. We always specify and install the correct IP-rated fittings for each zone on every bathroom installation.
